50's thing vs. 80's Thing: which do you chose?

Dunno if I'm repeating another thread, but I love both of these movies and was wondering which one you all preferred? I guess I am prejudiced by the fact that I saw Carpenter's version first, but...

Re: 50's thing vs. 80's Thing: which do you chose?

Just watched both last night. First, the original: This is, to my recollection, my first viewing of this film. And because of that, it didn't really do much for me in terms of a horror film. I didn't...

I like 'em both, as well as both versions of Body Snatchers.

Re: 50's thing vs. 80's Thing: which do you chose?

I prefer the 1951 version. I saw it at a young age on BBC2 one day and it really frightened me, very suspenseful and although you didn't get a good look at the Alien, it was a great creature design. I...

Re: 50's thing vs. 80's Thing: which do you chose?

The different attitudes of the two versions are interesting. The first one is a can-do cooperative blend of the military and science, where even those who are wrong (a scientist, of course, not a...

When I first saw Carpenter's THE THING it seemed especially graphic to me.  Everytime one of the insane iterations of the creature appeared the mixture of bizarre figures, blood and saliva really gave...

the original with out a doubt, it has that 'claustrophobic' atmosphere that always gives me goose bumps, never know when the creature ( a great job by Marshall Dillon himself) is going to show up, its...

Re: 50's thing vs. 80's Thing: which do you chose?

Was there any CGI? I've read somewhere that Carpenter was so impressed by Rob Bottin's effects that he used them and shot them in a way Bottin hadn't intended. Some of them look a bit rubbery these...

The material is approached so differently in the two films that it's hard to decide. I like both of them.

I'm not a big admirer of Carpenter, Anyone who can't appreciate Val Lewton is on a different wavelength to me. Halloween is a fine film, and you can't blame him for the schlock it inspired. I don't...

50s, 50s 50s, all the way and beyond. I really can't take Carpenter's remake, just too graphic. The '51 was way more interesting to me, and it didn't need any stinkin' fancy EFX.

Like 'em both, think the original story is stronger, with a great social commentary in the narrative. Think the remake's monster is cooler, and enjoy the nihilism in the remake's story. This is like...
